A Sedgwick County judge has sentenced 38-year-old Rachael Hilyard to life in prison with no parole for 50 years for a brutal 2017 murder in southwest Wichita.
Hilyard was convicted in a February trial of first degree murder in the death of her former boyfriend’s mother, 63-year-old Micki Davis. Police said Davis was found beheaded at a home in the 1400 block of West Rita, in a neighborhood near Pawnee and Seneca, on April 9th, 2017. Investigators said Davis had gone to the home with her grandson to get property that belonged to her son.
Family members of Davis appeared at the sentencing hearing to ask a judge for the maximum sentence, and then Hilyard told the family that she deserved all the time she would get.
Hilyard underwent several mental evaluations before being ruled competent to stand trial in 2019. During her trial she said voices in her head told her to murder Davis.
