UPDATE: Sedgwick County’s Health Officer, Dr. Minns, amended his order to let bars and clubs stay open until midnight. The new order took effect Friday, September 18.

Sedgwick County commissioners have voted to recommend an extra hour of operation for bars, nightclubs and restaurants under the health order for the coronavirus pandemic.

Commissioners voted unanimously to recommend to the county’s health officer, Dr. Garold Minns, to extend the curfew from the current 11 p.m. to midnight.   There have been a number of reports of bars and nightclubs staying open beyond 11 p.m. and Wichita police recently cited four local businesses for not enforcing the city’s ordinance on masks.

Commissioners have heard from bar and nightclub owners who want to extend the curfew.  Commissioner Michael O’Donnell said COVID-19 numbers have been improving and he wants to take an incremental approach to reopening the economy.   He said he wants to work with Dr. Minns on the response to the pandemic.

The county’s health order is in effect until October 21st.
