Southeast Wichita standoff ends early Wednesday

UPDATE: This standoff ended around 1 a.m Wednesday. A 33-year-old suspect was taken into custody without a struggle.

Wichita Police have been on the scene of a standoff at the Clairmont Aparments in southeast Wichita.

The apartment building is in the 9100 block of East Harry, near Harry and Webb.    Police chief Gordon Ramsay said in a message on Twitter that the man was wanted for a number of sexual assaults, and he pulled a gun on officers when they tried to arrest him.   The man is a suspect in a home invasion and sexual assault reported last weekend in south Wichita, and in two separate cases from August 29.

A heavy police presence was reported, including a SWAT team,  at least one armored vehicle and a K-9 Unit.   Negotiators were talking with the man, who locked himself in an apartment.  The neighboring apartments were evacuated as police surrounded the area.

We will continue to update as more information arrives.
