COVID-19 case affects kitchen at Sedgwick County jail

The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office said Monday an inmate who works in the kitchen at the county jail tested positive for COVID-19.

Undersheriff Brian White said the inmate was tested while waiting to undergo an unrelated medical procedure.  The positive test led the sheriff’s office to quarantine 53 other inmates who work in the jail kitchen, and another 54 inmates had to be trained for meal service.   That caused some delays in the meal service over the weekend, but White said it was back on schedule Monday.

White said none of the other 53 inmates have shown any symptoms, and they were quarantined as a precaution.   He said the jail is continuing to maintain sanitation standards including extra soap and having disinfectant available as needed.  All staff members have been issued masks and all inmates have been wearing face coverings over the past few months.

White said the kitchen staff is divided into three groups of 18 inmates, and it’s a 24/7 operation to prepare breakfast, lunch and dinner.   He said staff and the meal service contractor have stepped up to maintain the service over the past few days.

White said if more inmates need to be quarantined or isolated, there is a plan to minimize further exposure to staff and inmates.
