Second inmate tests positive for COVID-19 at Sedgwick County jail

The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office reported Wednesday that a second inmate has tested positive for COVID-19.

The inmate reported he was sick on July 18th, and he was placed in quarantine.   The results of the test were reported Wednesday and the inmate was instructed to quarantine at home.

Based on advice from state health officials, the jail will offer testing to 12 staff members and 49 inmates who may have had contact with the infected inmate.   There are 47 inmates who will be quarantined until they are medically cleared, and the other two inmates have reported symptoms so they were placed in isolation.

Three inmates were released from the jail before the testing results were known, and they will be contacted by health officials.   The Sheriff’s Office will also contact judges, members of the district attorney’s office and defense attorneys about the case.

The Sheriff’s Office says this case is not related to a previous case of COVID-19 in the jail that was reported on July 20th.
