Sedgwick County health officer proposes new restrictions

Sedgwick County’s health officer is calling for more restrictions to deal with a recent increase in coronavirus cases.

Dr. Garold Minns talked to county commissioners during a staff meeting Tuesday and said a new health order needs to go into effect.  He said the county was doing well in May, but the coronavirus has thrived in warm weather, and people have been getting out to enjoy summer activities.   He said COVID-19 cases have gone up tenfold in six weeks, and action is needed to get the situation back under control.

Dr. Minns said the virus is affecting younger people, and 82 percent of the cases in Sedgwick County are affecting people younger than 60, while less than 55 percent are younger than 40.

The new health order would close bars and nightclubs and close restaurants at 10 p.m.

The proposals would also limit mass gatherings to 15 people or less, and all fairs, parades and festivals would be canceled.     Venues with capacity of 2,000 or more would be closed.    Businesses would also be required to enforce social distancing of six feet between patrons who are not of the same household.

Dr. Minns said the order would not affect schools, licensed day care facilities, churches and religious institutions, or summer camps.

The restrictions would be in place through September 9th, following the current order that requires the wearing of masks in public places.
