Sedgwick County commissioners receive proposed budget for 2021

Sedgwick County manager Tom Stolz has presented a recommended budget of more than $457 million to county commissioners.

Stolz said the coronavirus pandemic has created a challenge in crafting a budget, but his spending plan calls for no tax increase with no planned reduction in services.  He said government services are needed more than ever in the community, from public health to the sheriff’s office and 911 to secondary services that are provided.

The budget provides for some new positions for the health department and the district attorney’s office, along with two positions for the new Integrated Care Team that responds to mental health calls in the community.   The county will be funding an EMS position and a COMCARE staff member to continue the program.

Stolz said there will not be a pay raise for county employees next year, which is painful to recommend, but the needs for the response and recovery from the pandemic will require some sacrifice.

County commissioners will have public hearings on July 22nd at 9 a.m. and August 10th at 6 p.m.   Citizens can also make comments through an online public forum at www.sedgwickcounty.org through 5 p.m. on August 11th.

Commissioners will vote on a final budget on August 12th.
