Governor will direct public schools to delay start of classes

Kansas governor Laura Kelly says she will issue an executive order for public schools to delay the start of the 2020-21 school year until after the Labor Day holiday.   She said the order will be issued Monday, July 20th, and it will delay the start of K-12 schools until September 9th.

The governor said the order will also include mandates for schools with regard to masking, social distancing and temperature checks.   The State Board of Education has approved guidelines for schools to follow in starting the new school year.   The governor said the plan is not a mechanism for opening schools, it will be a guide for school districts in delivering the best possible education to students.

The governor said the three-week delay will give schools time to work with their counties to get the necessary supplies like masks, temperature scanners and hand sanitizers.  She said the time will allow each superintendent to review the plan from the state board of education to work out what strategy is best for their district.   She said the delay will also allow the state to monitor the coronavirus infection rate, and with everyone’s help, get the numbers trending down again.

Kelly said “I cannot in good conscience open schools when Kansas has numerous hot spots where cases are at an all time high and continuing to rapidly rise.”
