Governor issues warning over coronavirus after latest numbers

By the Associated Press and KFDI News:

Kansas has set a new record for its worst two-week spike in reported coronavirus cases since the pandemic began. That prompted the state’s Democratic governor to issue a stern public warning Monday in hopes of pushing the public and local officials into accepting masks in public as necessary.

Governor Laura Kelly said the state has seen at least seven new clusters of two or more reported cases in the past five days directly related tied to bars and restaurants. During the past two weeks, Kansas reported an average of 317 new coronavirus cases a day. That was nearly 15% higher than the previous record.

The governor said there has been conflicting information about the pandemic, and she said “certain elected officials and other influential voices would rather put their heads in the sand and keep ignoring this very real threat.”  She said many elected officials in Kansas and around the country have chosen to dismiss recommendations from public health experts in favor of short-term political points.   She said the issue is not about state and local control, and it’s not an question of personal freedom, but it’s a matter of social responsibility during the worst outbreak of a communicable virus in a century.

The governor said there has been an increase of 14 clusters of coronavirus activity in the state over the past few days, and seven active clusters are related to gatherings at bars and restaurants.    She said no clusters have been reported with barber shops, nail salons or other close-contact services, because they have been using masks and following practices to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.
