Sedgwick County detention deputy accused of false crime report

A detention deputy in Sedgwick County is accused of falsely reporting a crime in 2016, and she has been booked into jail.

Sheriff Jeff Easter said Friday that the deputy reported in December, 2016 that she had been sexually assaulted by another detention deputy.   Easter said an investigation was conducted and information was presented to the district attorney’s office, but no charges were filed.   He said both deputies were later disciplined for policy violations unrelated to the sexual assault report.

Easter said the deputy who reported the assault applied to be a commissioned deputy earlier this year.  Part of the hiring process is an interview with a background investigator, and Easter said the deputy admitted during the interview that she made a false police report about the alleged assault in 2016.    That led to a criminal investigation and the deputy was arrested and booked into jail on Friday.

Easter said the deputy had been with the sheriff’s office since 2015.  She has now been terminated, and she was booked into jail on charges of interference with a law enforcement officer and obstruction in a felony case.    Easter said the other deputy who was originally accused in the false report no longer works for the sheriff’s office.
