Spirit Aerosystems to begin furloughs for MAX workers

Spirit Aerosystems in Wichita will have 21-day furloughs for employees who work on the Boeing 737 MAX program.   The furloughs will begin Monday, June 15th.

The company sent a message to employees Wednesday that said the decision was the result of continued uncertainty over the MAX and when it will return to service.  There are also ongoing concerns with the economic impacts of the coronavirus pandemic on the airline industry.

Spirit said the unpaid furloughs will affect all Wichita hourly employees who are directly associated with the production work and support functions for the 737 programs.   Health care benefits will continue during the furlough.   The company will submit the names of the furloughed employees to the state of Kansas, but each employee will have to file weekly claims for unemployment benefits.
