A system has been set up to allow for public comments during Wichita city council meetings. The council suspended its public agenda over the past few weeks because of safety measures for the coronavirus, and city hall has been closed to the public.
A livestream and video conferencing arrangement has been created at Century II, in rooms 101-A and 101-B. People will be allowed to make real-time comments during the council meeting. Visitors will be asked to wear masks, and masks will be provided. They will also be asked to follow social-distancing requirements.
Mayor Brandon Whipple said email comments will continue to be accepted, and they must be submitted by 8 a.m. on the day of the council meeting.
The city of Wichita is starting a four-phase plan to reopen city hall and other buildings to the public. Phase one is now underway, with preparations being made for a reopening of city facilities. Phase two will have limited access to the buildings from May 26th to June 30th. Phase three is scheduled to start July 1st and it will provide for a continued loosening of restrictions, and more information will be provided later. Phase four is a complete reopening, and a date has not been scheduled. Mayor Whipple said that will depend on a vaccine or treatment for COVID-19.
