The Kansas prison system has its first confirmed COVID-19 cases and they’re all from the Lansing Correctional Facility.
A statement from the Kansas Department of Corrections says three employees of the prison tested positive for the virus. These workers are identified as a man over 20 and two women over 40, but no more information on the workers is being released.
Medical staff are working to identify close contacts of the patients and notify them. Inmates who may have been exposed are being moved into medical isolation and will be monitored for symptoms.
“With a virus that moves and changes as quickly as the coronavirus we anticipated that this day may come,” says Department of Corrections Secretary Jeff Zmuda. “With the support and guidance of KDHE and Governor Kelly, and the hard work of our staff members, we are ready to care for our residents and those we serve in the community.”
Lansing currently houses 1,906 inmates.
