Wichita schools to reveal plan for continued learning

Wichita school superintendent Dr. Alicia Thompson says all school buildings and central offices will be closed for the rest of the school year, after Governor Laura Kelly’s order to close down K-12 schools because of the coronavirus outbreak.

Dr. Thompson says school nurses are reaching out to student with medication needs, and then the district will work with parents to retrieve personal items.   Mail and deliveries will be coordinated with administrators at each building.

Teachers were to get more information about the plan for continuing education, and deputy superintendent Dr. Tiffinie Irving said parents will learn more about the plan next week.  She said student progress will be monitored but there will be no specific assignments given and attendance won’t be taken.   She said online programs will require the internet and an electronic device, and the district will work with students and parents on how to use the system.

Dr. Irving said a priority focus will be on graduating seniors to make sure they meet the requirements to graduate.  Dr. Thompson said “my heart hurts for our high school seniors who will miss out on the traditional senior celebrations.”   She said a way will be found to celebrate the accomplishments of the seniors.

The division director of operations for the school district, Fabian Armendariz, school meals will be available to students 18 and younger starting Monday, March 23rd from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.  They will be offered at Mueller Elementary School, and the Marshall, Jardine and Truesdell middle schools.
