  • Wichita mayor, council members in self-quarantine after Washington meeting

Wichita mayor Brandon Whipple and three city council members are in self-quarantine as a precaution after attending a Washington, D.C. conference where two people tested positive for the COVID-19 virus.

Council members Brandon Johnson, Becky Tuttle and James Clendenin are in self quarantine along with the mayor.

They attended a National League of Cities conference earlier in March, and the League made attendees aware late Tuesday that two participants had tested positive for the coronavirus.   The League did not identify the two, citing privacy laws.

Vice-mayor Cindy Claycomb, council member Bryan Frye and city manager Robert Layton were also in Washington but did not attend the Congresssional City Conference.  Council member Jeff Blubaugh did not make the trip.

A press release from the city said the mayor and council members have not shown any symptoms and they are seeking further guidance from the Sedgwick County health director’s office.   Residents and city employees who have been in proximity to the council members do not need to self-quarantine or be tested.
