With the growing concern involving the spread of the Coronavirus in Sedgwick County, and surrounding areas, a number of events have been cancelled or postponed. Also, some mandatory rules have been put in place to slow the spread of COVID-19.

Here’s what we know so far:

NEWS

  • Confirmed Coronavirus Cases now at 14 in Kansas (via KFDI News) Two more positive cases of coronavirus have been reported by Johnson County health officials, and Ford County is reporting one case.  That bring’s the total number of cases in the state to 14.
    No details have been released on the new cases from Johnson County, which bring that county’s total to ten cases.   Ford, Butler, Franklin and Wyandotte counties have reported one case each.
  • Senate considering Emergency Stimulus Bill for Coronavirus (Via KFDI News) The White House is proposing a roughly $850 billion emergency stimulus to address the economic cost of the new coronavirus.
    The request will be outlined to Senate Republicans on Tuesday. It will aim to provide relief for small businesses and the airline industry and propose a massive tax cut for wage-earners.
  • KCC suspends utility disconnections until April 15th due to COVID-19 Emergency (via KFDI News) The Kansas Corporation Commission has issued an emergency order preventing the disconnection of customers utilities until April 15.
    Citing emergency declarations by Governor Kelly, President Trump and the World Health Organization, the commission used its emergency powers to issue the order suspending disconnections for non-payment.  The order applies to all electrical, natural gas, water and telecommunications utilities.
  • Sedgwick County now banning gatherings of 50 or more (via KFDI News) Sedgwick County commissioners have issued a local state of emergency due to the coronavirus, and the county is banning all public gatherings of more than 50 people.
    The county’s public health officer, Dr. Garold Minns, said the recommendation is in line with the latest guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control.   Dr. Minns said there are currently no confirmed cases of COVID-19 with Sedgwick County residents, and the county remains at low risk for the virus.   He said the guidelines are aimed at keeping the county at low risk.
  • Ascension Via Christi Taking Further steps to prevent COVID-19 (via KFDI News) Ascension Via Christi is taking further steps to prevent COVID-19 at their hospitals. They have asked volunteers not to report for their shifts and to stay home until further notice.  Additionally, Hospital-based health education classes, support groups and tours have been suspended.
    On-site hiring events at the hospital have been suspended and all interviews will be conducted by telephone rather than in person.  Changes are also being made to the hospital cafeterias.
  • Governor Laura Kelly has issued an emergency declaration for the state in response to the coronavirus, and the state has reported its first death from the COVID-19 virus. (Per KFDI News)
    The Kansas Department of Health and Environment said Thursday evening a man in his 70s was taken to a hospital and died shortly after arrival.  Testing was positive for the COVID-19 virus.  The man was living in a long-term care facility in Wyandotte County.
    KDHE secretary Lee Norman said health officials are working on identifying people who had contact with the man.  This would be the state’s fifth case of coronavirus.  The other four cases have been reported in Johnson County.
    The emergency declaration from the governor will authorize the use of state resources and personnel to assist with response and recovery operations in affected counties that meet certain criteria.

  • Foo Fighters at Intrust Bank Arena – (POSTPONED until a later date)
  • Bare Knuckle Fighting at Intrust Bank Arena-  (RESCHEDULED to June 20th)
  • Wichita Thunder Hockey & remaining ECHL season – (CANCELLED)
  • Harlem Globetrotters at Intrust Bank Arena – (POSTPONED until a future date)
  • Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Center – (All events are POSTPONED) Museum and theater remain open to the public
  • Greater Wichita YMCA’s temporarily closing (Via KFDI NEWS)
  • Dillons Changing hours during Pandemic to allow time for proper restocking and cleaning. (VIA KFDI NEWS)
  • St. Patrick’s Day Parade (originally scheduled for Saturday, March 14th in Delano) – CANCELLED
  • Napoleon Dynamite Screening/Cast Conversation (originally scheduled for Friday, march 13th at The Cotillion) – POSTPONED
  • Jackyl (originally scheduled for March 27th at The Cotillion) – POSTPONED
  • Wichita Wind Surge Games – UNDECIDED: Official statement from the MiLB and Wind Surge organization. Click HERE to read.
  • Wichita Wings – Regular Season CANCELLED. MASL monitoring the situation to determine when/if a playoff can be held for this season. Read their full statement HERE.
  • USD 206, Remington-Whitewater, cancelled class on Friday the 13th. The school says the cancellation was because of concerns over the new coronavirus. Spring break runs next week, and it’s not clear if the district will let classes resume normally after spring break is over. (Per KFDI News)
