I’m finally gonna see my future wife, Tatiana Shmailyuk, at Rocklahoma this year. Front woman of the Ukrainian metal band, Jinjer.

Since the live studio version of “Pisces” went viral, I’ve been a fan, constantly digging back in their library, and hearing stories of them on tour, opening for Devildriver, and putting everyone to shame. So when I heard new music was coming, I geeked. When I found out they were coming to Rocklahoma this year, I literally yelled “F**K YES” from my office. (A few co-workers weren’t so enthusiastic as I blared “I Speak Astronomy” and “On the Top.”)

ANYWAY, today, they dropped a video for their new song “Retrospection,” and it solidified everything I love about this band. The topic is very personal for them, explaining the hardships of keeping in touch with their families. Even when on tour, and in Ukraine, they often can’t see their families due to distance, or even war.

Parts of the track it are in their native language (Ukrainian), and the music is equal parts prog, hard core, melodic, numetal, extreme… whatever. It transcends any one sub-genre of metal, and that’s EXACTLY why they’re at the top of my “Must See” list for Rocklahoma this year. Not to mention… Tatiana has this incredibly angelic singing voice, and then belts out this guttural growl that most guys can’t duplicate!

(Seriously… Tatiana… if you read this… call me.)

I can’t wait to see this live, in person, for the first time. New album “Macro” is out. “Retrospection” is on it. Find it, listen to it… and enjoy.
