The 62nd annual Grammy Awards will air January 26th on CBS, but, per usual, there’s a good chance we won’t see any rock categories on the screen.

REGARDLESS, we still have some metal heads and rock groups with nominations. I Prevail, Rival Sons, and Tool lead the way in rock acts with two nominations each. Both I Prevail and Rival Sons are up for Best Rock album of the year.

Full list of Rock nominees and Meatball’s reactions and picks below:

Best Rock Performance:

  • “Pretty Waste” – Bones U.K.
(Coming with Korn and Breaking Benjamin in February)
  • “This Land” – Gary Clark Jr. (Predicted Winner)
  • “History Repeats” – Brittany Howard
  • “Woman” – Karen O. and Danger Mouse
  • “Too Bad” – Rival Sons (Meatball’s vote)

Meatball – “No offense to Brittany Howard (she’s an amazing musician), or Karen O. and Danger Mouse (also great musicians), but those slots belong to a Badflower, or a Bad Wolves, Bring Me the Horizon, Fever 333, Papa Roach… there’s so many better choices. It’s like the committee had too many options for Alternative, so they dumped Brittany and Karen O. over to the Rock category, which…. no. Just…. no. Again, not bagging on the songs, because they are good… just not in the right category.”

Best Metal Performance:

  • “Astorlus – The Great Octopus” – Candlemass feat. Tony Iommi
  • “Humanicide” – Death Angel
  • “Bow Down” – I Prevail (Meatball’s vote)
  • “Unleashed” – Killswitch Engage
  • “7empest” – Tool (Predicted Winner)

Meatball – “Really thought I’d see Slipknot in here, but overall, not disappointed in the nominees. And as weird as this is, I gotta give props to the committee for picking the best Tool track on the album. However…. I Prevail SHOULD be the dominant metal act this year.”

Best Rock Song:

  • “Fear Inoculum” – Tool (Meatball’s vote)
  • “Give Your Self a Try” – The 1975
  • “Harmony Hall” – Vampire Weekend
  • “History Repeats” – Brittany Howard
  • “This Land” – Gary Clark Jr. (Predicted Winner)

Meatball – “This is where I have my biggest gripes this year. Tool is the only act that belongs on this list. Aside from that, where’s Badflower? Papa Roach? Bring Me The Horizon? Fever 333? The Glorious Sons? Skillet? Korn? Volbeat? Highly Suspect? Bad Wolves? Literally ANY of those would have been better choices. The 1975 might BARELY qualify as rock. Same for Vampire Weekend I guess. But, again, Brittany Howard is amazing, but more alternative/Funk, and Gary Clark Jr. just released a hip-hop track with guitar in it. I REALLY hate this category this year.”

Best Rock Album:

  • “Amo” – Bring Me The Horizon
  • “Social Cues” – Cage the Elephant
  • “In The End” – The Cranberries (Predicted Winner)
  • “Trauma” – I Prevail (Meatball’s Vote)
  • “Feral Roots” – Rival Sons

Meatball – “Not bad actually. I get the sentimental pick for The Cranberries – likely their last record ever. Cage the Elephant is an acceptable audible considering the trends of the committee… but I was surprised that Badflower didn’t get ONE nod this year, and THIS is the category I expected to see it in.”

Best Recording Package:

  • “Anonimos & Resilientes” – Voces Del Bullerengue
  • “Chris Cornell” – Chris Cornell (Meatball’s vote)
  • “Hold That Tiger” – The Muddy Basin Ramblers
  • “I,I” – Bon Iver (Predicted Winner)
  • “Intellexual” – Intellexual

Meatball – “Literally no reason to mention this category, except that Chris Cornell is in it. No idea about these other packages. Chris Cornell forever. We miss you.”
