Winfield police say they have arrested a 47-year-old man for attempted first degree murder and other charges, in connection with suspicious items that were found Thursday in a camper at the Cowley County Fairgrounds.
Police were contacted by a woman who found the items Thursday morning, and police determined that the items were a safety hazard. A Wichita police bomb squad was called to the scene to remove the items safely.
The suspect was booked into jail Thursday evening on charges of attempted first degree murder, attempted aggravated arson and criminal use of an explosive. Winfield police and Cowley County sheriff’s deputies also searched the man’s home near Atlanta.
The case is still under investigation.
The items were found as the Cowley County Fair began its first day of activities. The fair runs through Monday.
