Police officer hurt in crash with school bus in southeast Kansas

by the Associated Press:

Authorities say a southeast Kansas police officer was seriously injured when he rear-ended a stopped school bus.

The Kansas Highway Patrol says the crash happened Wednesday on U.S. 166 after the bus driver stopped to drop off students 2 miles west of the Montgomery County town of Tyro. The patrol says none of the seven Caney Valley Schools students riding on the bus were hurt, although the bus’s driver complained of pain.

The Coffeyville Police Department said in a Facebook post that the 46-year-old officer was returning from out-of-town training and wasn’t responding to an emergency when the crash happened. The officer had to be cut from his patrol vehicle and was flown to a hospital with serious injuries.   The officer’s police dog also was in the car but wasn’t seriously injured.
