POP CULTURE:

  • Charlie Sheen. An absolute meltdown in his personal life and career that consisted of “WINNING,” Goddesses and Tiger’s Blood.
  • “OMG” and “LOL” were officially added to the Oxford Dictionary. (SMH)
  • Planking was a thing…. so yeah.
  • Contestants in the Davis County, Utah Rodeo Queen contest were forced to use Stick Horses due to an outbreak of Horse Herpes
  • A copy of Action Comics #1 (the first comic featuring Superman) was found in an abandoned storage unit, estimated to be worth over $1 million. The comic actually belonged to Nicholas Cage, who had it stolen from his house 11 years earlier, and was returned to him.
  • According to a 2011 North Korean government study; China is the world’s happiest nation, followed by North Korea. “The American Empire” came in last.
  • Russia didn’t consider beer to be an alcoholic beverage until 2011. Before then it was classified as a soft drink.
  • Richard Branson opens the first commercial Spaceport in the United States.
  • The Royal Wedding between Kate Middleton and Prince William takes place in the United Kingdom on April 29th.

SPORTS:

  • World Series – St. Louis Cardinals defeat the Texas Rangers in 7 games. (The Cardinals mounted a two-run comeback in the 9th inning of Game 6 to extend the game and tie the series, forcing game 7)
  • Super Bowl – Green Bay Packers beat the Pittsburgh Steelers 31-25 at Cowboys Stadium (Now AT&T Stadium). This was the first Super Bowl in the Dallas/Fort Worth area
  • NBA Champions – Dallas Mavericks beat the Miami Heat in 6 games. (First season for The Big 3 – Lebron James, Chris Bosh, and Dwyane Wade in Miami)
  • Stanley Cup – Boston Bruins defeat the Vancouver Canucks in 7 games for their 6th title. This is the Bruins’ most recent Stanley Cup win
  • NCAA Football Championship – Alabama beat LSU 21-0. This was only the third time in BCS history that no automatic-qualifying BCS Conference teams finished the season undefeated.
  • NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship – #3 UConn Huskies beat the #8 Butler Bulldogs 53-41. (First season for the “First Four” round of games, extending the field from 65 to 68 teams in the tournament.)
  • Between 2009 and 2015, Usain Bolt won every World Championship and Olympic gold medal in the 100m, 200m and 4×100m relay – except the 2011 100m World Championship, where he had a false start.
  • Robert Griffin III wins the Heisman Trophy

ROCK RELEASES:

  • For their 2011 tour, The Foo Fighters submitted their tour rider, or performance agreements, as a 50 page coloring book complete with a word search and maze. 
  • The Detroit Symphony Orchestra was in a deep financial crisis. Kid Rock, in what he called “the best drunk move I ever made,” decided to throw a benefit concert. He raised over one million dollars for the symphony and helped save classical music in Detroit. 
  • R.E.M. announces breakup

 

BOX OFFICE:

  • “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows: Part 2” premiered, marking an end to the Harry Potter storyline.
  • “Transformers: Dark of the Moon”
  • “Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part 1”
  • “Captain America: The First Avenger”
  • Adam Sandler’s 2011 movie Jack and Jill was nominated for all 10 Razzie Awards and won every single one.
  • Every single movie in the top-10 grossing list was either a sequel or adaptation. No original

TELEVISION: 

  • Charlie Sheen fired from Two and a Half Men for… “WINNING.” He was replaced with Ashton Kutcher until the show’s end.
  • The “Oprah Winfrey Show” airs its last episode
  • “Entourage” ends on HBO
  • Game of Thrones premieres on HBO
  • Singing competition “The Voice” premieres on Fox
  • One of Tyler’s favorite shows, “Suits” premieres
  • “American Horror Story” makes it’s premiere on FX with the “Murder House” season
  • “Friday Night Lights” airs its final episode
  • “Hannah Montana” ends on the Disney Channel
  • “Beavis and Butthead” was cancelled after 18 years

HISTORICAL EVENTS:

  • A massive earthquake off the coast of Japan caused widespread destruction, and tsunamis that killed more than 16,000 people, and crippled the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Plant that is still being dealt with today.
  • On December 30 2011, Samoa skipped a day to move to the other side of the International Dateline. Before then, it was the last country in the world to see the sunset each day, now it is one of the first to greet a new day.
  • Arizona Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords was shot along with twelve others while making a public appearance in Tucson. The accused gunman Jared Loughner killed six of the people who were shot, one of dead was a nine year old girl. Giffords survived the attack but was in critical condition.
  • On May 2nd, it was announced by US President Obama that Osama Bin Laden had been found and killed by US Navy Seals in Abbottabad, Pakistan. This marked the end of the search for the man who was thought to be responsible for the attacks on the World Trade Center on September 11th of 2001.
  • A tornado cuts a six mile path and damages about two-thousand buildings as it leaves a wake of devastation through Joplin, Missouri. The city was left without power and at least 115 people were found dead with many others unaccounted for. Over 1,000 people reported injuries.
  • The Occupy Wall Street movement began on September 17th of 2011 as a protest meant to highlight income inequality in the United States and rest of the world. The movement was best known for its “We are the 99%” slogan, referring to income inequality.
  • NASA launches the Juno spacecraft during August of 2011. Juno’s mission was to conduct a long, scientific study of Jupiter, the solar system’s largest planet while orbiting around its poles. The space probe was set to examine the magnetic field, composition, and gravity field of the gas giant planet. It also had the core mission of studying the atmosphere to look for evidence of water. Juno arrived at Jupiter during July of 2016.
  • The Space Shuttle Discovery makes its last docking at the International Space Station on February 26th, before its impending retirement.
