POP CULTURE:

  • The Rubik’s Cube makes its debut.
  • CNN launches, the Cable News Network, owned by Ted Turner. It was the first 24-hour News Network, dedicated to round-the-clock coverage of National and Worldwide news.
  • 3M began making the Post-It Notes and selling them for the first time.
  • John Lennon was shot and killed outside of his New York apartment

SPORTS:

  • The Miracle on Ice at the 1980 Winter Olympics at Lake Placid, NY. The U.S. led the CCCP (Soviet Union) 4-3 in the final minute, and was considered a MASSIVE underdog in the game. The U.S. completed their Gold Medal run with a comeback win, 2-1 over Finland.
  • The Pittsburgh Steelers win Super Bowl XIV, defeating the LA Rams 31-19 in Pasadena.
  • The Philadelphia Phillies defeat the KC Royals in six games to become World Series Champions.
  • L.A. Lakers beat the Philadelphia 76ers in six games to become 1980 NBA Champions. Magic Johnson won the NBA Finals MVP in his rookie year.
  • The New York Islanders beat the Philadelphia Flyers in six games to become Stanley Cup Champions
  • No. 1 Georgia beat No. 7 Notre Dame in the Sugar Bowl 17-10 and became the 1980 NCAA 1-A Football Champions
  • The Louisville Cardinals beat the UCLA Bruins 59-54 to get their first NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship. It was their first Finals appearance, and 4th appearance in the Final Four.

HISTORICAL EVENTS:

  • Mt. St. Helens erupts in Washington. A series of Earthquakes in March led up to the first volcanic explosion. It was the first eruption of Mt. St. Helens in more than 100 years, collapsing a new crater at the top and spewing steam and ash for miles. Then, again in May, pressure built back up, and an explosion and eruption even bigger than the first blanketed the region in ash again. In all, 57 people were killed.
  • The “Killer Clown” John Wayne Gacey is sentenced to death for the murder of 33 young men and boys.
  • The MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas is destroyed by fire.
  • A 6.0 Earthquake in Italy killed more than 3,000 people
  • The Iran Hostage situation was still ongoing. Fifth Two American diplomats were held hostage for 444 days, which included the entirety of 1980. It stands as the longest hostage crisis situation in history.
  • The U.S. Boycotted the Summer Olympics in Moscow for their invasion of Afghanistan
