Sedgwick County Zoo officials said one of the chimpanzees in the Koch Orangutan and Chimpanzee Habitat had a stillborn baby over the weekend.
Sukari went into labor on Sunday, after experiencing a smooth, full-term pregnancy. Zoo officials said an ultrasound showed a healthy baby last month, but the baby did not survive the birth.
Zoo officials said Sukari displayed excellent maternal behaviors during and after labor, and tried to revive the baby. The rest of the troop in the habitat is keeping a close watch over Sukari while she deals with the loss.
The Koch Orangutan and Chimpanzee Habitat is closed to indoor viewing for the time being to allow Sukari and the other chimpanzees time to deal with the loss.
