“Scentless Apprentice” came out on Nirvana’s album “In Utero” in 1993, so it stands to reason the band was probably busy writing it in the year leading up to its release.

HOWEVER, what we’ve now discovered, is Dave Grohl may have had a hand in writing the guitar parts, even though he was their drummer at the time.

New audio from former Tad drummer Rey Washam gives us Grohl, Krist Novoselic, and Washam jamming out “Scentless Apprentice” minus Cobain. Washam on drums, and Grohl playing guitar. This was right about the time Grohl was learning new instruments to broaden his abilities.

Washam writes in the video’s description:

“At the Nirvana rehearsal studio. Dave was obviously new to guitar, but had some songs he wanted to try out with a band. I had just quit playing in Tad and Dave asked me to come over and ‘jam.’ I had never met Dave or Kurt and Krist even though I had heard Kurt was a fan of a band I used to be in, Scratch Acid.”
