Millions of people voted, but 17 percent, and over half a million believe Def Leppard deserves a spot in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
The announcement came this morning, 547,647 votes for Def Leppard to get in. They were followed by Stevie Nicks (427,844) and Todd Rundgren (365,370). Rage Against the Machine were also in the running, but landed ninth in voting with (148,208).
HOWEVER, this doesn’t mean they’re in. The top 5 bands in the fan vote will go on one ballot for a committee to choose from. So they could still lose to Nicks, Rundgren, or The Zombies and The Cure, who came in at 4 and 5 in total votes. Odds are good, though, unless the committee remembers some comments made by frontman Joe Elliott.
A while back, he said the band would “politely refuse” the offer if awarded to them, then continued:
“What an elitist thinks is an impact is very different to what the regular man on the street counts as impact.”
He also believes the nomination process is purely based on U.S. record sales. (Funny enough, when looking for video of his comments, any video clips have conveniently disappeared from the internet.)
An official announcement of the inductees will be made Thursday morning at THIS LINK.
