A man has pleaded guilty in Sedgwick County District Court in connection to the co-sleeping death of his infant son.

The District Attorney’s Office says 34-year-old Kyle Kempton of Wichita, pleaded guilty Wednesday to one count of involuntary manslaughter and four counts of endangering a child.  Kempton was at a bond modification hearing when he changed his plea.

The District Attorney’s Office says it was not a plea agreement and Kempton voluntarily pled.  A sentencing hearing is scheduled for January 22nd.

The incident happened on August 30th at a west Wichita motel.  Kempton, and 39-year-old Christy Rollings were staying at the hotel with their 2 month old twins.  Police were called to the scene after one of the twins was unresponsive.

Both Kempton and Rollings were highly intoxicated at the time and 2-month old Patrick Kempton reportedly died after his father fell asleep with him on the bed and at some point rolled on top of him, smothering him.  Police had been to the motel the day before and had removed the two children and placed them with a relative.

Police say that relative later returned the children to Kempton and Rollings.  On October 20th, Rollings pleaded guilty as charged to involuntary manslaughter and four
misdemeanor counts of endangering a child.

She had no plea agreement with the state, according to the District Attorney’s Office.  She was sentenced to to probation for manslaughter and 24 months in jail for the
misdemeanor charges.
