One of the most important lessons in life I ever learned was taught to me by Todd Conklin....he was my IPC (Innerpersonal communications) instructor my freshman year of college.....I will never forget it....the first day of class he walked in without saying a word and wrote F U (only spelled out) in huge all caps on the chalk board.....he then turned around and pointed at me and said.....what do you think of that?.....I said something to the extent of it not being expected and rather rude to say the least......He then proceeded to ask several other students and got basically the same response....at which point he said.......these are just words....nothing more....it is we who apply the meaning to them and it is up to us to determine the depth of that meaning based upon how we individually perceive their delivery.......in other words....it's not the words themselves that determine their true meaning....it's how you say them......if you hold a puppy in your lap and softley pet him and whisper those same to words soothingly to him over and over he will respond positively....yet if you scream at the top of your lungs the words "you are the greatest dog alive!!!!" over and over he will respond in a negative and frightened way.........they are just words........I will never forget that day. Thank you as always for checking in! Rick

  • Sweetness!

..Kansas has done it again!...they are the sole representatives of the Big Twelve as we head into the Sweet 16!!!....Let's just hope they can continue....as we all know the last thing KU needs to do is look past anyone....and I mean anyone...in this tournament.....Even though I am a true blue rock chalk Jayhawk fan, I was still saddened to see K State lose....as well as Texas.....as far as I am concerned when it comes to this time of year, I am for any and all Big 12 representation.....am keeping my fingers crossed as Kansas prepares for the Richmond Spiders!!!!...Thanks for checking in as always!.......Rick

  • night owls

I have always been a night owl...even when I was a kid....I simply can not go to sleep until 3 or 4am most of the time....maybe i totally comprehend what James Dean meant when he once said he was always up most of the night because as he put it....he was afraid he might miss something.....I don't know.....Don't get me wrong...I am definietly not complaining...I mean Dean was right to some degree....a lot of cool stuff goes on late at night.....sometimes i will step out onto my porch and just soak things in at 3am....what I mean by that is....it's kinda like finding some level of spiritual peace so to speak.....everything is quiet....unmoving....no hustle and bustle....no pressure whatsoever to be anywhere or do anything that very second.....it's as if the world...or at least your little section/part of it....is completely yours and yours alone.....sometimes i will sit out on my porch at 3 or 3:30 am and before i know it 20...30 minutes have passed.....have i lost my mind??? Try it sometime when you are up that late......and get back to me on it by all means.......thank you as always for stopping by! Rick

  • Pink Floyd

Pink Floyd Experience tonight at the Cotillion!...Pink Floyd is one of those bands that I never got to go see live.....and it kills me!!!! I love Pink Floyd.....very rarely if ever does a band come along that really.....really.....really hits something deep inside of me......don't get me wrong by any means.....there are a ton of bands who i can and often do listen to as often as possible because I absolutely love their work....(Alice In Chains/Seether/Shinedown/Stone Sour/many more too numerous to mention)....but Pink Floyd simply takes things to a level very few do for me....Its almost as if whenever i listen to them they sort of like just,,,I don't know how to explain....they just become a part of whatever it is i am going through....if that makes any sense at all......like I said...other bands do that as well,,,,but not like Pink Floyd does......I so wish I would have had the chance to see them!!!!!! anyways thank you as always for checking in!!! RIck

  • April Fools

....what would you say is the greatest prank you ever pulled on someone? or greatest prank you ever pulled on an entire group of people?......April fools is almost here!!!!...the tough thing about pranking people on April 1st though is that they are always on the lookout for it then!....(Don't worry.....believe me I will still put forth the old college effort!).....Nothing,,,and i mean nothing...beats a well executed prank!!!...even if I am the victim I will be the first to applaud if its a good prank...one that requires a fair amount of effort on behalf of the prankster....one that definitely shows off the prankster's moxy and intellect is always good too......not that there is anything wrong with the classic and simple pranks that always seem to bring forth laughter and confusion at the same time!.....anyways thank you as always for checking in! Rick

  • Remember when

......for whatever reason.....I can't for the life of me explain it....on the way to work today I started thinking about places I would go to as a kid that no longer exist.....or exist but are almost extinct so to speak......again I don't know why but I just did......remember Sambos??....I used to love that place when i was a wee one!!....how bout Peter Pan Ice Cream stores........or ..... T G & Y......rememver them????.....I even recall going to A & W drive ins.......I was like less than knee high to a grasshopper....but I remember going there......Alco.....remember that one?.......and of course.....The Pop Shop.......I loved that place during the hot summers!!!!....as always....thank you for checking in................Rick

  • Avalanche

.....Stone Sour/Theory/Halestorm/Skillet here this thursday!!!!!! Hartman Arena!....Hank and I both will be doing our shows live at Hartman Arena......what a great lineup!....I am actually a bigger fan of Stone Sour than Slipknot.....not that I don't love me some slipknot.....I have just always been a huge fan of Stone Sour.....The lyrical content alone is incredible.....the last time I actually spoke to Corey outside of an interview situation was several years ago in Kansas City....he and I talked Sopranos while backstage right before a Stone Sour show at the Beaumont.......anyways thank you as always for checking in....................Rick

  • First cd

....Do you remember what your very first cd/album/full length piece of music was?....I do.....I remember it vividly.....it was Back In Black by AC/DC......I actually had a walkman....remember those?....I must have played it t million times!!!....the first time I heard Rock and Roll ain't Noise Pollution I knew i was beyond hooked....I grew up on Back In Black.....as well as 2112/Fly By Night/Moving Pictures (Rush)....and Pink Floyd....(any)......and bands like Def Leppard.....The Clash.....U2....VH.......Motley Crue....and many others too numerous to mention.......are todays bands better?....I would say that in some ways yes and in some ways no.....I absolutely love bands like Seether....Stone Sour......Shinedown....Papa Roach.....STP....Alice In Chains.....Soundgarden...Distturbed....Chevelle......etc.....and honestly I don't think its fair to compare them to bands that I grew up with simply due to the fact it's two different eras completely.. That's what makes rock the greatest format ever conceived.....it evolves....it changes....it adapts....and that's why it will always be here....as long as there are people who can not stand conformity....people who not only relish breaking the rules....but relish to the same extent creating their own rules.....rock will survive.....no other format has that type of fluxuality to it....no other format is as apparent and vocal about the overall environment in which human kind exists....if that makes any sense.....no other format more adequately reflects the overall mood/anger/happiness/sadness/joy/excitement of people......period.....it is merely a reflection of us all......and thats what makes it so incredible..........thank you as always for checking in! Rick

  • Could You Do it?

....I finally saw the movie 127 Hours the other day....just in case you didn't already know it's the true story of Aaron Ralston....the hiker who accidentally (obviously) got his right arm trapped underneath a boulder while hiking in Utah....he was miles from nowhere and had no cel service and no one anywhere near him to help him....unable to free himself he was trapped for a period of no less than 5 days.....being the experienced outdoorsman that he was, he unfortunately had deemed it as unnecessary to inform anyone as to his whereabouts......realizing that odds were very slim that anyone would find him anytime soon, and out of supplies, he decided there was only one thing he could do if he wished to live.....he cut his right harm off just below the elbow....with a pocket knife.....applied a tourniquet....and walked several miles until he ran into some tourists who called for help.....one of the park rangers who was first on scene claimed he had never ran into anyone who was that determined to live....which brings me to my question for you.......If you were in the same predicament.......could you do what he did?.....I would like to say that if it came down to life and death I could....but honestly.....I can't say for sure considering I have never been in that situation....anyways it is a good film and if you get time I certainly recomend it......thank you as always for checking in!
